I've been driving in Dubai for 5 years and never knew traffic was this damaging

I consider myself a pretty experienced driver. I've been commuting from Dubai to Abu Dhabi for work for years and thought I knew everything about car care. Change the oil regularly, check tire pressure, that kind of thing. But last week my car started making this weird noise and a mechanic friend asked me how often I sit in heavy traffic. I told him daily and he just nodded like he expected that answer. He sent me a link to a detailed explanation about how stop-and-go driving in our heat specifically damages engines and transmissions. I had no idea that constant idling breaks down oil faster or that transmission fluid degrades so quickly in traffic conditions. The article explained that short trips don't allow the car to fully warm up and burn off contaminants either. I feel like I've been neglecting my car without even realizing it. Anyone else have this wake up call about city driving?
