How do you handle car trouble when you are flying solo with kids?

Being a single parent means every surprise expense hits twice as hard, especially when it comes to the car. Last month it was a alternator, this month it is something with the suspension. I cannot afford to be without a vehicle because I have to get the kids to school and myself to work, but these random bills are wiping out any little savings I manage to put aside. I am desperately trying to get ahead of the curve by actually paying attention to the small noises and leaks I used to ignore. The whole concept of lowering unexpected repair expenses really appeals to me right now because my budget cannot handle many more surprises. I am thinking about setting aside a small fixed amount each week specifically for car maintenance, so when something does break, it is not a complete disaster. How do other solo parents manage the stress of unpredictable car costs?
