Chromaturia: Distinguishing Between Benign and Serious Causes

Chromaturia refers to abnormal discoloration of urine and can arise from both benign and serious causes. Harmless factors include dietary pigments, dehydration, or medications like nitazoxanide 500mg, which may alter urine color temporarily. However, red or brown urine could indicate hematuria, liver disease, or muscle breakdown, while cloudy urine may suggest infection. Blue or green hues can result from certain drugs or rare metabolic conditions. Proper evaluation involves patient history, medication review, and laboratory testing. Early differentiation is essential to rule out underlying pathology and ensure appropriate treatment, especially when symptoms persist or are accompanied by pain, fever, or systemic signs.
