Our family car is now out of warranty, time to get serious about upkeep

Our main family car, which we use for school runs and weekend trips, just hit the five year mark and is officially out of warranty. With two kids and all their activities, a reliable car is non negotiable for us. I have started thinking more seriously about keeping your car reliable long term because we plan to drive this one for several more years. I found a really practical guide that talked about moving beyond just oil changes to focus on things like transmission fluid and coolant system maintenance, which are easy to forget when you are busy. It also stressed the importance of finding a good independent garage you can trust for regular check ups, rather than just taking it to the dealer for everything. For other parents in a similar situation, how do you balance staying on top of maintenance with a busy schedule? And how did you find a mechanic you felt comfortable with for your family car?
